Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 11, 2026

Impostor Software LLC ("we", "us", "our") operates mobile applications including SocialSound and 8-bit Bytes (each an "App"). This page informs you of our policies regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of personal data when you use our Apps. Sections below that name a specific App apply to that App only.

Information We Collect

Apple Music Library (MusicKit): With your permission, the App reads your Apple Music library to display your artists, play history, and listening stats. This data stays on your device and is not transmitted to our servers. We send only artist names (not your personal data) to our backend to fetch news, concerts, and release information.

Location Data: With your permission, the App uses your location to show concerts and events near you. Your precise location is never stored on our servers. Only your approximate region is used for Ticketmaster and Eventbrite queries.

Contacts: If you use the Smart Sharing feature, you may pick contacts from your address book. Contact data (name, phone, email) is stored locally on your device only and is never sent to our servers.

Anonymous Aggregate Data: We collect anonymous, aggregated data such as artist popularity counts (how many users follow an artist's news). These numbers contain no identifiers and cannot be traced to any individual.

Anonymous Usage Analytics: To understand how many people use the App and which features they interact with, we record feature events (for example, "the Feed tab was opened") along with a random identifier generated on your device the first time you open the App. This identifier:

We use this identifier only to count unique users and measure feature usage so we can improve the App.

Optional Location Analytics (SocialSound, opt-in): If you choose to opt in via Settings → Analytics, we also receive your ZIP code and the list of artists in your library so we can understand regional music interest. This opt-in data uses a separate, server-generated identifier and can be turned off at any time. You are never required to opt in to use the App.

8-bit Bytes

8-bit Bytes is a learning app with no accounts. The only data we ourselves collect is the same Anonymous Usage Analytics described above: anonymous daily counters of feature events (for example, "a lesson was completed" or "a quiz was taken") tied to a random UUID generated on your device and stored in the App's Keychain. The identifier is never derived from your Apple ID or any device identifier, is never shared with advertisers or data brokers, and is not used to track you across other apps or websites. Quiz answers, lesson progress, and downloaded audio are stored only on your device; we receive event counts, never their content. Lesson text and narration audio are fetched from our content servers; those requests carry no user identifier.

Advertising (8-bit Bytes only): The free version of 8-bit Bytes shows ads served by Google AdMob. When an ad is requested, Google's SDK may collect and process data as an independent service — including your IP address, coarse location derived from it, device information, and (only if you allow it) your device's advertising identifier — as described in Google's Privacy Policy and how Google uses data from partner apps. On iOS, the App asks for App Tracking Transparency permission; if you decline (or have "Allow Apps to Request to Track" off), ads are served non-personalized and no advertising identifier is shared. We never give the advertising SDK your lessons, quiz answers, progress, or our internal analytics identifier. A one-time purchase to remove ads entirely is planned.

Information We Do Not Collect

Third-Party Services

The App connects to the following external services to provide its features:

Each of these services has its own privacy policy. We only send the minimum data required (typically an artist name or song title) to these services.

Data Storage

All user preferences, saved contacts, recent shares, and listening history are stored locally on your device using iOS UserDefaults and App Group containers. This data is not backed up to our servers.

In-App Purchases

Purchases are processed by Apple through StoreKit. We do not collect or store any payment information.

Children's Privacy

The App is rated 4+ and does not knowingly collect data from children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.
